It featured debutantes Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor as the Dreamer and Nastenka respectively. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Sanwariya is loosely based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s celebrated short story of unrequited love, White Nights. The reference is likely to be borrowed from the complexion of Hindu god Krishna, who was known to be dark-skinned and extremely attractive. Originating from sanwla (dark), it’s a common term used for a tan-skinned lover in Hindustani poetry. sanwariya (which is also the title of the film) literally means blue-black complexioned. In this song, the wait for the moon is seen as a parallel to the wait for the beloved, who appears after many days of patience and penance. Thirteen years later, Kher is going strong, establishing himself not only as a sought-after playback artist, but as an independent performer of Sufi-style popular music. It became a rage in 2003-2004 period, with all radio channels playing it endlessly for months, catapulting Kher to well-deserved stardom after years of struggle. This song written by talented singer-composer-lyricist Vishal Dadlani, is saturated with spiritual metaphors and a message to never-say-die in the face of adversities. It was the introduction of Kher for mainstream Bollywood music lovers. The translation of Allah Ke Bande is dedicated to maverick Indian singer Kailash Kher who was born on this day in 1973 and has established himself as one of the most dynamic performers of the current generation of Bollywood singers.
